F550
The Ford F-550 is a medium-duty chassis cab in the Ford Super Duty lineup. It is a common foundation for larger party buses and limo buses because of its high payload capacity and available diesel power.
Overview[edit]
The F-550 is a Class 5 chassis cab, positioned above the F-450 and below the F-600. Its gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is typically around 17,500 to 19,500 pounds, depending on configuration.
Powertrain[edit]
Recent F-550 models offer a 7.3-liter gasoline V8 and a 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel V8. Earlier generations offered a 6.8-liter V10 gasoline engine and various Power Stroke diesels.
Use in party buses[edit]
Coach builders use the F-550 for medium-to-large party buses that need more capacity than a van-based E450 can provide. The chassis cab configuration gives builders a bare frame onto which they can mount a custom body and interior.
